Daniel was a 40-year-old entrepreneur who felt like he was failing his business and his family. He wanted to be a positive example, but instead he often felt like he was the problem.
Daniel had energy, drive and intelligence. So what was leading to his inertia? He believed he had ADHD, but he’d never been diagnosed.
Inaction typically won out over his desire to act. This robbed him of meaningful activities with his family and in being strategic and timely in his business.
Through our coaching process, Daniel discovered that he was more preoccupied with micro-managing others than he was with his own habits. He interpreted their visible discomfort with his ‘interference’ as resistance to their growth, which only triggered him to push harder. He was identifying with their success. If they didn’t succeed, he’d feel like a failure.
When he did make a mistake, it felt fatal to him. He urged himself harshly to ‘get with the program’. But he didn’t know how to get with the program. Nothing seemed to work, so he distracted himself by controlling the behaviour of others. But that wasn’t working either!
Daniel courageously asked himself to step up in a different way.
He decided to slow down and shift his focus to the bigger picture. Instead of reacting to what he thought was happening, he paid attention to the larger context.
When he did pay attention, this is what changed:
After our coaching together, Daniel stood straighter. He shared with me that he now felt like a leader – from the inside out.
